Inclusive & Culturally Responsive Therapy

Culture, Identity & Multicultural Therapy

Understanding the Person Within Their World

Every person has a unique story.

Our emotional wellbeing is shaped by many aspects of our lives, including our family relationships, culture, ethnicity, religion, language, gender, sexuality, community, personal values and life experiences. These parts of our identity influence how we see ourselves, relate to others and respond to life's challenges.

For some people, culture and identity are central to the difficulties they bring to therapy. For others, they are simply one part of a much bigger picture. My role is never to make assumptions, but to understand your experiences within the context of your life.

Looking Beyond Symptoms

Sometimes emotional difficulties cannot be fully understood without considering the wider context in which they developed.

Family expectations, cultural traditions, migration, experiences of discrimination, identity, belonging, caring responsibilities and societal pressures can all influence how we think, feel and relate to ourselves and others. They may also affect how comfortable we feel expressing emotions, asking for help, setting boundaries or making decisions that feel true to ourselves.

Therapy provides an opportunity to explore these experiences with curiosity and compassion, helping you better understand yourself without judgement.

You May Recognise Yourself If You…

  • Feel torn between your own needs and the expectations of your family or community.
  • Carry responsibility for everyone else while neglecting your own wellbeing.
  • Feel guilty when you prioritise yourself or set boundaries.
  • Find yourself balancing different cultures, identities or ways of life.
  • Feel pressure to succeed or avoid disappointing others.
  • Struggle to express emotions because it wasn't encouraged growing up.
  • Feel misunderstood or that others don't fully appreciate your experiences.
  • Question where you belong or feel caught between different expectations.

Although these experiences are common within many cultural communities, they are not limited to any one background. People from all walks of life can experience similar struggles in different ways.

Specialist Knowledge, Inclusive Practice

Alongside more than 16 years of clinical experience supporting adults, young people and families, my doctoral research explored the lived experiences of ethnic minority women, deepening my understanding of how culture, identity, family relationships and societal expectations can shape emotional wellbeing.

While my research focused on women, the insights gained continue to inform my work with people from a wide range of cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds. It has strengthened my understanding of the importance of recognising each person's unique context rather than making assumptions based on culture or identity.

I work with women and men from diverse backgrounds, as well as individuals who do not identify with a minority community. Regardless of your background, my approach remains the same: to understand you as an individual and provide therapy that is compassionate, collaborative and tailored to your unique experiences.
